TUCUMCARI, NM – A 71-year-old man died, and many other people sustained injuries in a chain-reaction crash involving 45 vehicles on the interstate in western Quay County.
The incident happened Monday, January 8th, on the westbound side of I-40 just west of Tucumcari.
Police say the pileup started when an 18-wheeler rear-ended a passenger van, ultimately killing the driver of the van, identified as David James McGarrah.
A passenger in the van went to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
Approximately 43 other vehicles were involved in the resulting pileup crash. No other fatalities have been reported, but officials say that many people were hurt.
Authorities suspect the crash may have been caused by inattention and slick roads.
